Today In Goalkeeper Fail

Earlier today (or maybe last night–it’s hard to know with time zones and desert football) a most improbable shootout goal was scored in the Coupe du Trone, Morocco’s main cup competition. Maghreb Fez (or MAS) was playing FAR Rabat in a tight match that ended 1-1. Khalid Askri was in the net for FAR when the MAS player (maybe you can navigate this website to find out who #28 is; I failed) shot the ball to the keeper’s left and was easily saved. Or so it seemed.

The ball had a good bit of backspin and while Askri was celebrating, the funny happened.

Yep, while Askri was walking away pounding his chest, the ball trickled into the net. The ref seemingly needed a little convincing, but correctly awarded the goal. Now, I can tell you that MAS won the shootout 7-6 to advance to the Quarterfinals of the cup, but I can’t say whether or not this goal was the reason they did. Suffice it to say, at the very least, this goal likely kept them alive.

Finally, a hearty congratulations to Robert Green, you are off the hook for most recent funny goalkeeper blunder.

  1. There is a hearty haha to this.

  2. I see why that that’s a goal and all, but being a shootout it does merit the question: when, exactly, does play end? When the ball stops moving? When the keeper saves it?

  3. Probably when the ref says the play ends. I would think the play would end in one of three instances: 1) where the ball goes beyond the touchline but not within the goal; 2) when the ball stops after being put into play but never crossing the goalline; or 3) when the keeper has gained control of the ball with the ball never having crossed the goalline.

  4. Mohamed Ali Benaamar is #28, and that was apparently the winning PK as the next 1 was missed

Procedures to Determine the Winner of a Match or Home-and-Away: “Unless otherwise stated, the relevant Laws of the Game and International F.A. Board Decisions apply when kicks from the penalty mark are being taken”

Law 14: “The referee decides when a penalty kick has been completed.”

  6. look at that, somebody went to the rules. how lawyerly.

I’ve seen some weird ball-spin calamities, usually during the regular course of play, but I’ve never seen something quite like this. Luckiest PK goal, and unluckiest keeper, ever.

  8. “The referee decides when a penalty kick has been completed.”
Translation: The referee’s decision is reality.

@Goat: Appropriately enough, since the referee’s perception is reality.

  10. I play goalkeeper. You are always taught that the only sure way to put an end to a PK is to gain control of the ball. A PK taken during the course of a game is live and a rebound can be put in the goal. Celebrate after you make sure you control the ball.

the goal made it 3-2 and i believe the other team had not yet taken their 3rd penalty

Save the celebration until after the game and never take your eyes off the ball.

That’s an amazing amount of crowd noise for an empty stadium. Where are all the fans – all I see are empty seats? Looks a lot like a fake video to me.

  14. The answer is easy. Play ends when the ball stops moving. Otherwise, any deflection by the goalie could be argued to be a dead ball. That ball kept moving and the goalie mistakenly assumed it was never going to roll into the net. Bad play on his part. If he paid attention, he could have stopped the goal easily.

To me this is not a goal,
The all makes two paths to the goal, one the actual kick, rebounds off the goalie moving the ball forward and then spinning back, to goal.
The path of the ball should only be forward.

Except that the rules specify that the ball may hit one or both of the posts before going in. The ball can’t only be moving forward if it hits one post, then the other, then goes in.
