Battle of fat, “old”, & slow to clash (softly)

I thought black was supposed to be slimming?

Sol “hey, I-just-got-married” Campbell may make his Newcastle debut against Fat Frank “it’s-not-my-fault, I’m-also-old” Lampard and The Blues at The Bridge for the Carling Cup tie. With Chelsea’s current winning streak, I don’t see Newcastle putting up much of a fight, despite their surprisingly strong campaign start.

Let’s hope they do, however ‘soft’ it may be. See you on the pitch, Sol!

If Lamps dove into tackles à la Gerrard he’d be hailed as the greatest player of his generation. Silly, silly Englishmen…

AHHH! ANON!!!!! You made me look!! AH! It wouldn’t be so creepy if not for the look on his face. AH!

@ Anon: I can’t believe I clicked on that again.

@Shane – historically, I’ve been on the, “Gerrard is better than Lampard” band wagon. But the past two years have made me realize how understated Lampard is and how Gerrard needs everything working in his favor to lead. Maybe Lampard doesn’t have the weight of captaincy and being “Mr. Chelsea” to contend with, although being the Jr. of a club legend has to be hard. Maybe I try too hard to convince everyone Gerrard is way past it. I don’t know…I do know that I f**king hate Chelsea, but begrudgingly have respect for Fat Frank.

@Keith – his eyes seem to say, “You want fire, eh? I’ll give you fire….”

@whiz: Gerrard’s slipped a great deal in my relatively neutral observation. I mean, I don’t care for Liverpool nor do I care for England, so I try to watch their matches in a vacuum of sorts. Lampard does the stuff everybody says Gerrard does, but he does it better. He stays home (read: “in position”), he orchestrates the attack, he scores more goals, he can actually stay of his feet in a challenge, he doesn’t go chasing down camera men after leveling from the spot in the fifth league game of the season… I’ve thought he was a better player since about 2007, and I thought they were nearly inseparable before then. Gerrard’s lived off the legend of Istanbul for far too long, certainly when it comes to his place in the national side. But hey, he scored two in a meaningless friendly against Bulgaria at Wembley, so what do I know?

And yes, I know it can mostly be chalked up to injuries. Still, players get injured, players get old, and therefore players get worse. Gerrard’s not the Gerrard of 2005 vintage anymore.

@MW: Are his eyes saying that, or are they saying: “Go ahead, drop the soap again…”?
