Mainz 05 Continues Surprising Tabletopping Run And Stunning Goal

Lewis Holtby celebrates Mainz’ 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich.

Mainz 05 maintained its perfect Bundesliga record this season with a 2-1 victory over Bayern at Allianz Arena. The club maintained its three point lead over second place Borussia Dortmund and opened a ten point lead over the defending champion Bayern squad. (Highlights below)

Mainz scored all three goals in the match. Tunisian striker Sami Alligui opened the scoring with a fabulous backheel to the far post off a Lewis Holtby cross in the fifteenth minute.

Bo Svensson then gifted Bayern a goal in the 45th minute when he tried to head back to his keeper who had come off his line to claim the chipped ball. The goal came just before the half and Bayern had been threatening for most of the latter portion of the half.

After the half, both sides threatened but it was Mainz who took the lead in the 77th minute. Adam Szalai scored the goal on deft trap and turn finding the right corner of the goal.

Bayern pressed in the final minutes but to no avail as the hole they were in just got deeper and deeper. A lack of finishing doomed Bayern as they had several gilt-edged opportunities throughout the match but could never pound the ball home.

Not sure how Mainz will be able to keep it up, but Dortmund is blazing through their fixtures so far and with impressive scorelines to boot.
