Your USWNT Update

Do you know who this is? No? Why do you hate America?

You’re all aware that the Women’s World Cup is being held in Germany next year (June 26th – July 17th), yes?

“But Kid”, you protest, “lady footy is boring!” Oh, get over it already.

Don’t you want to support a winner? The United States Women’s National Team has had so much more success than their male counterparts that there is simply no comparison between the two sides. Olympic gold, World Cup winners, overall dominance of the footballing world – the ladies are actually the pride of the USSF.

Still, how many of you honestly knew that the World Cup was next year, never mind knowing where it is being held? Coach Pia Sundhage has been hard at work putting her squad together for qualifying matches, and last week she released her 30-woman roster:

GK: Nicole Barnhart (FC Gold Pride), Jill Loyden (Chicago Red Stars)
DEF: Rachel Buehler (FC Gold Pride), Stephanie Cox (Boston Breakers), Ali Krieger (FFC Frankfurt), Amy LePeilbet (Boston Breakers), Heather Mitts (Philadelphia Independence), Christie Rampone (Sky Blue FC), Becky Sauerbrunn (Washington Freedom)
MID: Yael Averbuch (Sky Blue FC), Shannon Boxx (FC Gold Pride), Kristine Lilly (Boston Breakers), Lori Lindsey (Philadelphia Independence), Carli Lloyd (Sky Blue FC), Heather O’Reilly (Sky Blue FC), Megan Rapinoe (Chicago Red Stars)
ST: Lauren Cheney (Boston Breakers), Alex Morgan (California), Amy Rodriguez (Philadelphia Independence), Abby Wambach (Washington Freedom)

So, a few things of note:
1. No Hope Solo in net, as she is recovering from shoulder surgery. She is projected to be back in time for the WC itself, but given her recent crankiness will Pia leave her on the bench (I can’t see her being left off the roster entirely) if Barnhart (who is now first choice) plays well during qualifying?

2. Only 7 players on that roster have previous WC experience. That group is lead by 39 year-old Kristine Lilly, who has 130 goals in 349 appearances (with those caps being a USSF record for either gender) and will be the first woman in CONCACAF to participate in five WC qualifying tournaments.

3. There is only one collegiate player on the roster. Alex Morgan of Cal was on the US U-20 team that won the WC in 2008 and is considered a rising star.

4. The roster does not include two notable names for previous teams. Defender Kate Markgraf retired last week, having earned 201 caps for the national team, while midfielder Lori Chalupny was left off due to concerns from USSF doctors over her history of concussions (despite the fact that she plays for her WPS side, the Atlanta Beat).

The USWNT will begin their qualifying campaign on Oct. 28 against Haiti, play Guatemala on Oct. 30 and finish Group B facing off against Costa Rica on Nov. 1.
