So it’s Halloween weekend. I have no life and, therefore, no plans to go out dressed like Spongebob or anything like that. Luckily, there are 30 soccer matches on various outlets today to keep me happy.
The biggest of the day in England has to be Manchester United against Spurs. Both are fighting to stay within striking distance of Chelsea, which plays in the 10 a.m. games. United need another victory and another stellar performance from Sweet Pea (new nickname is sticking) and Berba. Meanwhile, Spurs need positive results or they risk falling back into the growing pack from sixth to 14th places.
In Spain, I’ll be interested to see if Hercules (Hercules Hercules!) can do the same to Real Madrid that they did to Barca earlier this season. However, my Magic 8 Ball says “All signs point to no.”
Meanwhile, in the MLS, Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas face off and San Jose plays NY Red Bulls sans Thierry Henry. Yippee.
Hope you have a safe and enjoyable Halloween eve.

More than Clattenburg, I’m interested in the AR’s explanation. I’d honestly like to hear what he was flagging for. I don’t think it was to give the goal, because that’s not usually what AR’s do is it? It couldn’t have been for offside, because there was nothing to do with offside in that play. If it was for handball, he’s signaling about a minute late.
(I do agree with Bill, though. We weren’t terrible. We had a decent first half, except for the defensive brainfart. Second half was meh.)
@Bill
Fair enough. I’ll say it another way: Spurs didn’t do enough to really merit a result today. Yet this controversy will allow that to be overlooked in all the frenzied media write-ups
Also, if this Serie A match is dull, I’m holding you personally responsible Orr.
@JT: But at least your third-rate commenters are acknowledging that we didn’t do enough to get a win, controversy notwithstanding. It’s just that the controversy is so spectacularly ridiculous.
@Ryan
The AR can have his own opinion on the play, and could have had his flag up a while, but the ref can overrule whatever his AR tells him. For Clattenburg, if he didn’t see the handball, he didn’t give the free-kick, and all he saw once he’d retreated upfield was Gomes putting the ball on the turf—a live ball based on no FK given—and Nani hitting it in.
Now I’m absolutely certain Georgia’s going to lose today too. Fuck sports.
That’s fine, Anon. It certainly is spectacular.
I think it’s now clear. Clattenberg doesn’t give a foul and doesn’t see the handball; Gomes drops the ball, making it live; and when Nani goes and takes it. With no whistle blown, that’s got to be the explanation.
“Nani, I know a goldbricker when I see one.”
@JT: I feel like you’re annoyed. Are you annoyed? Do you want to cuddle?
JT, we agree.
Ryan, I’m a ref. If you agree with the ref, who has given a goal, you sprint up the touchline towards the middle of the field.
You only flag when you disagree. The “Clattenberg clearly didn’t see a handball so STFU” defense doesn’t work here. That’s why Clattenberg has an AR, to see things he doesn’t see.
@JT: Oh, definitely. I know “the AR can have his own opinion”. And that Clattenburg can overrule him.
I’m just wondering what exactly that opinion was.
I delayed my beer run because I thought it was gonna actually start at 4:30, so it has already angered me Ryan. Let’s hope that’s not a bad omen.
@Bill: No, no, NO! Clattenburg has an AR so the AR can see things that Clattenburg can dismiss as unimportant and do what he wants.
@Orr: You’re a NE Italian. Wine in a box will surely hold you over. :P
Should Gomes have waited for a freekick to be clearly given? Undoubtedly. But, sometimes in the interest of keeping the game moving/keeping the focus on the players, when a foul/handling/out of bounds is so obvious AND the AR waves his flag for it, the referee chooses to not use his whistle. Or, maybe Gomes thought there must have been a whistle but he didn’t hear it. Yes, it’s a little dumb on Gomes’ part. But it’s more ridiculously arrogant on Clattenberg’s part to see the AR flag, talk to the AR, and then overrule the AR on something he didn’t even see.
Milan off to the races
Not quite Anonsters. NY Italian transplant.
@Bill: It did look like from one of the replays that Clattenburg was looking at the play. Maybe not.
Oh a good move and then Ibra off the bar!
Pato was onside there
No Chiellini for Juve too? Ouch, Milan must take advantage
That was about the single worst piece of officiating I have seen this season. Recap: Nani is allowed to handle the ball in the box and Scholes is allowed to grab the ref. Gomes is not allowed to ask for clarification as to what the call or no call is and Modric is not allowed to tell Clattenberg that if he had one more eye he’d be a cyclops.
Can’t believe I’m defending Spuds, but they got screwed. Doesn’t matter that there were just a few minutes left and Tottenham looked like poo after VdV went off.
@PR: I didn’t get to watch, but three points are up for United, so YAY!!!!!
No yellow for trying to undress Pato?
Very open game this.
Wow, the trajectory of that header totally fooled me.
Damnit
Lots of players slipping on both sides
Didn’t amount to anything, but that was a sweet job by Martinez to beat 2 defenders…
Abate coming on for the injured Bonera after a nasty collision of knees with De Ceglie
Boateng gets a deserved YC
Oh come on Ibra! Milan need to finish there chances, really should be winning this game. Halftime.
*their, yikes
Having watched the replay, You wuz robbed. Also, Nani is my new Ronaldo, I hope he breaks his leg every match by not being touched
(not for scoring, but for celebrating like a tw*at)
What’s the score in the MIlan game?
Jesus Ibra finish!
@Anon – 0-1 Juve
Juve beginning to resemble a MASH unit
Thanks. I suppose I could’ve checked, except that I’m trying to understand a directory structure I created for sorting documents on a certain topic, and it makes no sense. About to give up on it. Sad when you can’t even figure out something that you yourself created.
Isn’t that what happens to most parents?
@Orr: I’m pretty sure the directory structure for cognitive science papers in my Documents folder isn’t alive. :P
It’s Anonsters’ Monster
Ha. It’s true. I’m giving up on it. I’ll have to redo it so where it makes more sense. How has Quagliarella looked?
Crap. What a disgusting goal.
Quags scored the first
Wow. That was shocking defending. Shocking.
SissoLOL on the whiff.
Heh, this commentator is pissed that Milan haven’t made a substitution yet.
Sweet, the streamer just switched from FSC to an Italian-language channel with the game on his satellite.
Nope, back to FSC now. This is fun.
Figures about Quagliarella. He was pants last year for Napoli.
Err, how is that not a corner?
Ooh, finger in Melo’s face by the referee for being shot by the sniper.
Yes! Ibra, finally. 1-2…
Well, that will make these last 10 minutes sort of interesting at least.
Lol. Gattuso crawls on top on the guy to make his point.
Lol @ Gattuso getting down in Quagliarella’s face while Q’s writhing around on the ground.
That makes me sort of <3 Gattuso.
ESPN3 crap out on anyone else?
Man, this FSC color commentator is a total Milan fan. It’s hilarious.
5 minutes to equalize
Milan’s gotta get the ball.
Good call but damn, almost a PK
Whew.
Very disappointed. Time to get drunk. Happy Halloween!
Woof, would’ve been a penalty.
Don’t go all Gattuso on us, Orr.
Anyone think FCD will have over 5,000 people at Pizza Hut Park?
I guess the better question is does anyone care?
Edu’s goal today was nice.

Dallas and RSL 1-1, but RSL has to play the last 20 without Javier Morales (2 yellows = red)
RC. Buh bye.
OK, now its 10v10 as Atiba Harris gets a straight red. 15 minutes to go
Bit soft on the RC there.
Looks like there are more people at this game than were at Colorado-Goatlings.
Mmm, never mind. It’s pretty not full. Crappy stream made me think those empty bleachers were people.
11,003 in Dallas today. 11,872 in Colorado Thursday.
Rapids “win”.
Heckuva goal.
That was one hell of a shot by Avila – FCD goes up 2-1
@Ryan: No way there’s that many people there. That would be over 50% full. No way that stadium is 50% full.
Well, maybe. I can’t tell. Hell.
Yeah, I don’t know, maybe the fixed cam side is really full?
The 10-11,000 range seems to be FCD’s usual attendance though.
On Twitter, Jamie Trecker is taking some pretty hefty shots at MLS, considering the game is being shown on his network and all.
If I played in FCD’s defense, I’d be a little concerned that my keeper pretty much refuses to catch a ball.
@Ryan: just looked up Trecker’s twitter feed. I think he’s just being blunt and honest. Though, I agree that’s not what I expect from anyone employed by any part of Fox’s media empire…
I largely agree with his point that the state of the game in America isn’t fantastic. However, I think to some extent he’s fighting against a position no one else is taking. For example, his initial argument appeared to be, “MLS isn’t top quality.” To which I think every sane person replies, “No s***”.
But like you say, the main thing that stood out to me was the biting the hand that feeds aspect.
Cognitive science is fucking awesome as hell. That is all.
@Ryan: yeah, I agree with what you tweeted for the most part – he’s tilting at non-existent windmills. I didn’t pay close attention to the announcers on the broadcast – were they hyping up the league/quality? But I don’t think any real footy fan in America believes they’re seeing top-quality football. Is that the eventual hope for the MLS? Sure, but that’s at least 20 years away, if not several lifetimes…
On a totally separate note, in researching Trecker’s tweets I came across his blog where he mentions Michael Owen and Mickey Mantle – I find that an interesting, and perhaps apt, comparison. Leg injuries took away what made both of them special…
EN VIVO. EN DIRECTO.
Geovanni fail. How do you not at least put a shot on target when it’s just you and the GKer?
Lol, Spurs.
Anyways, Toffees up, keep rolling (ie, barely winning), so I’m good.
