Rostering an International Doesn’t Pay

Wrong National Team?

Coming off a somewhat surprising World Cup performance this summer that saw the likes of Thomas Mueller, Sami Khedira, and Mesut Oezil emerge as rising stars, Die Mannschaft departed South Africa in high style.

Pocketing around $25 million for its troubles, the German Football Association—DFB—made a profit off the venture and is now generously sharing those monies with the German clubs that provided players to the national side.

So, Bayern must be rolling in even more dough now, right?

Well, the total pay, distributed amongst all 36 clubs of 1.Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga will be 1.927 million euros.  This converts to around $2.68 million and of this, half will be disbursed equally between all clubs and the remainder will be shared pro rata based on how many players a club sent to South Africa.

So each club in one of the top two German leagues will receive at least $37200 and those that had several players named to the squad–namely Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen–will earn a few more rubles.

That’s all?  From a $20+ million purse for finishing in the semi-finals, German clubs are getting a little over $37K?

Granted, this is a post-expense disbursement to 36 entities—which seems a bit skewed considering no 2.Bundesliga clubs sent players to South Africa—but still this seems a bit like the bad tipper at a restaurant.  If you choose to be a bad tipper, sometimes it’s better to just stiff the waiter rather than leaving an unreasonably poor tip in change–it’s less insulting to the waiter.

As for where the rest of the post-World Cup spoils went–my guess is on even more fashionable sweaters for Jogi.

    Sure it does. See how those internationals were sold for money. it paid those clubs for rostering an international player.

    @ TFA: Certainly, it does pay in a way to roster an international. Despite needing their performances on the pitch, Stuttgart and Werder appreciate the transfer fees they got from Real for Khedira & Oezil. It was more of a response to the general press release article that went out–DFB generously sharing its profits with the clubs! Then you break it down and it’s about as much as Ronaldo uses to blow his nose.

    Q for everyone but TNO (since I know his answer): Are abs like that on a female attractive?

  4. Rogering an international on the other hand…

  5. whizalen

    doesn’t really do it for me, wg, no.

  6. Lucius

    No, those abs are overkill.

  7. James T

    I also vote no.

  8. BG

    Alex Rodriguez votes yes. I vote noe.

  9. Ryan

    Mark me down for a no as well, but they aren’t unattractive.

  10. Tno

    I don’t mind it. It’s weird I honestly don’t have a type whatsoever.

  11. Lennon's Eyebrow

    I think if she were hot, they’d be fine. But she’s not, so it’s kind of weird.

  12. I dig those abs, for the record.

  13. DaDickMan

    I could see the appeal of abs like that as a change of pace since I’ve never encountered anything like that in person, but I like my ladybodies softer as a rule.

  14. James T

    @NYK
    Only because you don’t have any of your own.
    @DDM
    Right there with ya.

  15. Mountain Wag

    So, the so-far tally:
    Yes: 2 (just Jacob and NYK)
    No:5
    Neutral: 3 (TNO, Ryan, DDM)
    @TNO – I assumed I knew your answer b/c if you do your nike swat team workout 2x/wk, I’d figure you don’t mind girls who work that hard either.
    .
    All in all, very interesting.

  16. Tno

    @Wag
    I’m still confused by your comment about me.

  17. Tno

    @Wag
    Oh ya I guess you’re right. My GF has a very subtle one left over from highschool soccer and Vball.

  18. Mountain Wag

    “My GF has a very subtle one left over from highschool soccer and Vball.”
    .
    Just FYI – normally men talk that way about girls’ stretch marks or babies. Not abs. lol.

  19. Tno

    @Wag
    So enjoy this while I can is what you’re sayin?

  20. Mountain Wag

    @TNO – Indeed.

  21. @MW: i can appreciate a nice set of abs on a female, but not body builder type abs. unfortunately, if you have abs like that you generally lose a little immediately above the abs. i also echo the sentiment that a female will need more than just abs though.

  22. Oyeoro

    @MW
    I normally lurk and do not comment. however, those abs are hot.

    As a weekend warrior (now), former college player, and gym hog, athletic women appeal to me more that the normal population. That’s right I said normal population.

  23. Keith

    @Wag: I’m a yes vote.

  24. Mountain Wag

    @TFA – that is true. It’s why most female body-builders do have to enhance above the abs.
    @Oyeoro & Keith – you bring the “yes” total up to 4. I’m impressed.

  25. @MW: you can put me in the yes camp. that should be 5 yes.

  26. corky

    I actually liked it too, so it’s a yes. If her thighs aren’t rubbing together at the top, then it’s a YES!
