Wednesday Backpasses: Late To The Game

Sorry. Been having a bit of fun over on twitter with the James T started (It’s true, I promise) #futureMLSfranchise hashtag. Let’s get to the other stuff.
An alternative Puskas list from guys who know [101GG]
Fashion on the football pitch. Not a pretty sight [Soccernet]
Nani plays great defense against CRon [Dirty Tackle]
Kick the ball away. Kick the ball away! KICK THE DAMN BALL–too late [Off the Post]
He had a few miutes today, but a newly capped US international may not play again for quite a while (and it’s not injury related) [ESPN]
Taking the Sporting KC idea a different way [TB11]

Finally:
On players, their talent, and how hard they try. A guest post from somewhere else [Run of Play]

  1. We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year. Running over the same old ground, what have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here, Jacob.

  2. Sadly, I have to reject part of the premise of JT’s RoP post:

    And then you get Benoît Assou-Ekotto. When he says that soccer’s a “good, good job” and that it’s not his passion, we get even more angry. His honesty becomes a weapon with which we bludgeon him after every error, every misstep, every miscalculation on the field of battle.

    I believe I’ve consistently said I admire BAE for admitting that and that it’s not something people should bitch about.

  3. And one corollary of the position JT set out in the RoP post is that we shouldn’t expect “loyalty” to clubs from players, either. Which, incidentally, is another point I’ve made in the past. It’s the dark underbelly of understanding that these people are just human beings muddling through the world like the rest of us. One that’s much less likely to be accepted than where JT chooses to leave off. Not that I’m accusing him of pulling his punches or anything. Just of not following the thought to its complete conclusion. :)

  4. Finally, here’s a less annoying version of the video of what was a wonderful moment for those of us who hate CRon & Nani both.

  5. Tno

    BULLSHIT I STARTED THE MLSFRANCHISE THING

  6. Tno

    Ok maybe i shouldn’t yell that much but still. “Can we start a petition to change RSL’s name. It’s effin ridiculous.”-Tno

    4:04 pm Eastern Time
    “@ TNO: I’ll start. Sporting Mormons”-OM
    _
    “@Tno, Salt Lake United Team?”-Wacman
    _
    “Was hoping for something more meaningful to Kansas City. Like, Atletico Kansas, or Borussia Kansasgladbach.”- James T SIX HOURS AGO… hmmmm

  7. Tno

    OK so maybe it was kinda OM too, or JT thought of a strikingly similar concept around the same time.

  8. Tno

    holy shit that hashtag has really blown up.

  9. We have a priority dispute, ladies and gentlemen. Call in the historians.

  10. James T

    Tno: You’re taking credit for hating KC Sporting’s name?

  11. Tno

    @JT
    I just want OM to have the credit of having the first #futureMLSfranchise. I actually like Jason Davis’ idea a few months back I think I even linked it here.

    Despite best efforts even Nani can’t turn cron into a sympathetic figure.

    And I will not lick the ball, thank you very much.

  13. You all may have started #futuremlsfranchise but I clearly ended it with Racine Santander.

  14. James T

    either way, Tno, it’s always fun to wake up and be accused of stealing ideas, so for that, I heartily thank you

  15. James T

    @Anon
    My brief was to look at application of talent. The “loyalty” discussion is a whole other post, in my opinion, but one that definitely needs to be written!

  16. Keith

    @Bill: Best one so far is “Lokomotiv Chattanooga”
    -
    think about it . . . yeah

  17. Keith

    @JT: OOH! you can use Gabby Agbonlahor’s latest contract extension and statements about how he “wants to be a one-club man, like Steven Gerrard” (and yeah, sure Giggs, Scholes and Raul as examples, too)

  18. Ryan

    Personally, I’m excited for the north Florida derby between Ajaxonville and Jackson Villa

  19. James T

    I’d pitch it as my next idea, but RoP already hit it pretty damn well
    http://www.runofplay.com/2010/11/05/on-loyalty/

    But all those examples are top-notch, Keith, especially as Raul is now in the Bundesliga.

  20. Keith

    @JT: Right, but that wasn’t his choice; RM pretty much said, “you can retire, or leave, but you can’t stay here.” So he’s the dark underbelly of what loyalty gets you.

  21. Lennon's Eyebrow

    A guest post at The Run of Play? You’re coming dangerously close to respectability. I won’t stand for it.

  22. @tno-I was referring to the hashtag, not the idea. We cool?

  23. Keith

    BTW: I correctly guessed the Headline, but not the outlet for England’s failure

  24. James T

    @Keith
    Oh, we agree completely. Loyalty in soccer gets you what it gets you in the corporate world: a pink slip when you’re deemed surplus to requirements.

  25. @JT: Good call on the RoP loyalty link:

    The simple answer here, which is also more or less the right one, is that fans want players to be loyal because fans are loyal.

    That seems exactly right to me.

  26. James T

    @Anon
    Yup. I could find no way to better express that.

  27. Tno

    @JT
    I was a bit drunk last night. Your the only website I come to, please don’t kick me out, please baby.
    /black guy talking to his girlfriend he just cheated on voice

  28. Lokomotiv Chattanooga is high-larious.

  29. Tno

    Oklahoma City Sounders was my favorite. Jacksonvilla was good too.

  30. James T

    Oh, Tno. It’s fine!
