Hughton Canned by Newcastle

Manager Chris Hughton got the sack today.

We’re kind of surprised by this because overall, Newcastle has played well this season. Despite a string of disappointing recent results, the squad is 11th in the table. This is a team that was in the Championship last season. Do they really think they are better than 11th right now?

Apparently. From the club’s statement: “Regrettably the board now feels that an individual with more managerial experience is needed to take the club forward.” Good luck with that.

  1. At the risk of repeating myself: Boo Toon.

  2. Outside Mid

As Mike Ashley is still in ownership at NUFC, this makes perfect sense. Hughton should remain in that pool of managerial candidates that never go away though, after bringing Toon back up from the Championship.

  3. Wacman

They have a lot of injuries right now, I don’t get this move at all.

  4. Scott B

Hodgson has much more experience. Please take him! This sacking is madness from Newcastle. Hughton has done as well as anyone could with that squad.

  5. bergkampesdios

This makes no sense. Beat Arsenal, tie Chelsea, destroy Sunderland, flirting with top half of the table almost halfway through. Wtf does Ashley expect? There has to be something else going on here.

  6. James T

It’s unbelievable dumbness. Mike Ashley’s reminder to us all that he still exists and is still very much Mike Ashley.

  7. Lennon's Eyebrow

    Bring back Joe Kinnear!

  8. @berg: You’re thinking a Major League-type ownership scenario? Charlie Sheen to the rescue!

  9. Wedel

Wow – that has to be bad news for the Toon. Stability and respectable results, Mr. Hughton? You must go!

    Bring back The Keegan!

Have already been reading twitter notes from Spurs supporters wanting to bring Hughton onto the coaching staff @ Tottenham as a potential successor if ‘Arry goes to the Three Lions.

  11. Lennon's Eyebrow

I don’t think I’d want Hughton managing Spurs. But I’d love to have him back as a coach.

  12. bergkampesdios

Pups – Ashley just might be stupid enough to try to move the team to Miami.

  13. Outside Mid

@ LE: Agreed there. He seems to be a great coach.

  14. @Anon: I just hope they don’t remove an article of clothing from a life size cut-out of this for every Newcastle win.

    Dear NUFC,
when you finally get a chance to taste the sweet liquor of mild success and mid-table certainty, DON’T PANIC and revert back the looney-tunes decision making that seems to be your recent lot in life…

    Signed,

West Ham may come calling for Hughton’s services before Spurs get a shot.

Truly disappointed in the firing, especially considering they didn’t immediately announce a successor. The twitters are abuzz with rumors of Pardew and O’neil, but if MO’N had issues with Villa’s board/ownership wait til he deals with Bobby Hill.

Really is a shame, the Toon Army had thrown their full weight behind a skipper for the first time in ages. Shame MA had to toss aside all the good will that had built up since relegation by firing the man.

  17. @prada: Why do you think he did it, then?

  18. Signal to Noise

Well, we all knew that whole Mike Ashley doing anything that made sense couldn’t have lasted that long.

The man has delusions of Europa League grandeur not even a year after rebounding from what had to be one of the most spectacular implosions and relegations in the Prem era.

Hughton will and should get another job in the Prem come next off-season.

  19. Pradajames

I think he wanted to do it after they were promoted, but couldnt. That would’ve been PR suicide (rim shot).
MA has never fully supported Hughton, refused to give him a long term deal upon promotion, refused to sign off on hiring an asst after Calderwood split for Hibs. MA seems to have it in his head that Hughton is not cut out to be a PL manager. With this unlucky and injury strewn stretch, Ashley finally found a suitable excuse to cut ties.

Now we’ll have to over-pay a manager, we’ll have a pissed off group of players, and we’ll have a relegation dog fight on our hands.

  20. Pradajames

Peter Beardsley in according to Four Four Two…

  21. Ryan

@LE: These guys aren’t for Kinnear.

  22. Lennon's Eyebrow

    @Ryan: Don’t worry, they’ll come around

  23. bergkampesdios

Alan Pardew? Seriously? I’m so sorry, Prada. I’ve kind of enjoyed your modest renaissance to date, but now I almost want NUFC to get relegated. Just to have a punishment equal to Ashley’s stupidity.

  24. Pradajames

@bergkampesdios – Yep, Pardew…He’ll be benching Ben Arfa and Tiote, I’m sure.

Its retarded that Ashley has been keen on canning CH for months yet didnt have a replacement lined up. Genius.

  25. bergkampesdios

Martin Jol, on the other hand…

  26. Pradajames

NUFC are interviewing Curbishley, Pardew, and Jol today, apparently.

  27. Precious Roy

    What about Cock Jol?

  28. I know it’s silly to try to get inside the mind of Mike Ashley, but honestly, I could sort of understand the Hughton sacking if he was going to bring in Jol. Not agree with it, but I could see the logic. But Alan Pardew? Alan Freaking Pardew? The heck?

  29. Ashley will offer Chris Hughton’s successor a results-based contract – and next to nothing to spend.

    How could Jol refuse???

  30. Tno

English owners are great aren’t they? Their Englishness really gives them a deep understanding of the sport. If every owner was English, the teams would run smoothly.

  31. Pradajames

    Aw, fucking hell.

The real reason Chris Hughton got the axe? It’s his birthday this Saturday and Mike Ashley didnt want to pony up for a gift.

  32. Keith

@PJ: Can’t say I’m too surprised. Both Martins ended up quitting their previous posts over transfer policy/funds, aka control over the team. Pardew’s a much more likely “yes man” than either Jol or MON.

  33. Steve

I thought Ashley wanted EPL experience? I think Pardew has less than 2 seasons experience.

  34. bergkampesdios

Steve – tough to call it experience when you’re getting your ass handed to you the whole time.

  35. Precious Roy

So he has experience sucking. It’s a perfect fit for Newcastle’s impending slide. Sorry Prada, but it’s exactly what Ashley deserves.

  36. jjf3

Sorry to hear about Pardew, Prada. I’d make more fun of Ashley’s stupidity, but firing Hughton for Pardew makes me think he has some sort of crack or PCP addiction, and those aren’t nearly as funny as plain old oafishness.

My sympathy to all NUFC supporters.

  37. Steve

So anyone picking them to go down now? They’re only four points above the zone… I’d like to think Carroll and Co. are better than the drop, but with that turmoil, seems like a recipe for disaster.

  38. Steve

Also, with this apparently being a part of “Ashley’s Way” at Newcastle (being financially profitable, I guess?), does that open up Carroll for sale in Jan.? Because I think there are quite a few top 8 teams that would be interested.

  39. WhoNeedsForwards

Well, one less team I have to worry about finishing ahead of Everton then. He’s hiring Alan Shearer again, right?

  40. Steve

    He hired Alan Pardew.

  41. Brian Laws wasn’t available?

  42. Pradajames

We’re going to get stomped on Saturday.
