Libya Still Has A Soccer Team

Maybe If We Move These Ammo Crates, We Can Put Up Some Goalposts

Despite Libya being on the brink of civil war (or is it now officially a civil war?), Marcos Paqueta, the Brazilian in charge of Libya’s national team submitted his 25-man roster over the weekend for the country’s next African Cup of Nations qualifier.

From Rio de Janeiro.

The manager fled Libya last week because, well, probably nobody wants to live in a war-torn country if they can avoid it. Plus, Rio is probably much nicer than Tripoli even without the former hosting Carnivale and the latter hosting a war.

The list was submitted late because Paqueta couldn’t get in contact with the country’s football federation as originally scheduled. Libya’s next match is an ACoN qualifier Match 25 against the Comoros, the tiny group of islands between Malawi and Madagascar. Also drawn into their qualifying group (Group C) are Mozambique and Zambia. Somewhat surprisingly, by FIFA rankings, Libya is actually the group favorite (Libya – 70, Mozambique – 94, Zambia – 101, Comoros – 186).

Currently the match is still scheduled to go on, although Paqueta is looking for a base from which to prepare, specifically Portugal: “It would be a good place, since we have one national team player who plays there and there is a good training structure.”

  1. When’s soccer going to stop this civil war? Libya needs its own Didier Drogba.

It would be this guy… he’s the one playing overseas in Portugal. Six goals in 164 appearances. Lethal that guy is.
