This is from yesterday’s clash between River Plate and Vélez Sársfield for the fifth matchday of Argentina’s Torneo Clausura.
Los Millos were playing at home in the Estadio Monumental against a Vélez side that finished second last year but has had a rocky start this year. River were doing well in the standings, with 8 points in 4 matches.
Then, on an otherwise pedestrian play in the 35th minute, 20 year-old Leandro Chichizola (who is River’s third-string keeper) made a comical error that gave Vélez the 1-0 lead.
Vélez went on to win 2-1, River dropped to sixth in the standings, four points behind leaders Racing Club. Even though manager JJ López refused to blame Chichizola for the loss, he will undoubtedly bring back Juan Pablo Carrizo as soon as he’s healthy enough to stand under the goalposts.
Poor guy. Hopefully he’ll bounce back from this someday.
