SASIC: Coffin in the Stands in Colombia

Sanguino's Coffin

I'm not sure what the Iguana banner has to do with any of this.

Colombian soccer fans witnessed a bizarre scene yesterday in the match between midtable idlers Cúcuta Deportivo and Envigado: with fifteen minutes left to play, Cúcuta fans brought a coffin into the stadium.

This wasn’t your garden variety toy coffin that fans hold up at Oakland Raiders games. There was an actual corpse inside.

Reports indicate that the Cúcuta barra bravas managed to bring the body of 17 year old Christopher Alexander Sanguino, who was recently murdered by hitmen while playing a soccer game at his neighborhood park, into the stadium to witness a Cúcuta match one last time. This was allegedly his final wish.

Sanguino was purportedly the leader of Cúcuta’s Barra del Indio, though that seems a bit unlikely given his age. In any case, he was definitely a diehard fan of La Furia Motilona, and his friends actually broke into the funeral parlor where his remains were resting, took his coffin, and brought it into the stadium.

Police are currently investigating to determine how they were able to breach the security access controls that were in place, but one official indicated that they probably just waited until the exit doors were opened for fans who wanted to leave early, then they barged in. Since they were a mob of nearly 300, they overwhelmed the security operatives in place at that gate.

The scene caused a bit of an uproar for two reasons: first, a number of fans were indignant at the morbid sight of a coffin being carried into the stands. Second, Cúcuta drew level a minute after the body arrived in the stands, which is just creepy. Even in death, Sanguino somehow managed to help his team earn a point.

La Barra del Indio’s members confirmed to the media that they received permission from Sanguino’s family to bring the body from the funeral home to the stadium, so that would put to rest any fears that they stole the body at such a sad and private time. They also insisted that they were merely carrying out Sanguino’s final request. The coffin remained in the stands for about ten minutes and then it was carried out, presumably to be returned to the funeral home.

SASIC indeed. I don’t know whether to be horrified or impressed.

IGUANA was the nickname of the murdered guy.

@Brian: Your friends might have a harder time getting your coffin onto a plane and trying to sneak your remains into Goodison.

  5. @Goat, I’m planning to die in Liverpool, make things easier for people

@Brian: When your time is just about up, simply stand outside of Anfield sporting a Nando jersey. You’ll be burned to death in no time. Cremains will also be easier to smuggle into Goodison.
