Football Politicians Must Think We Are Damned Fools

That's Patrick John in the corner.

Patrick John, Dominica FA president and long-time Jack Warner ally, made some intriguing statements about the World Cup hosting fiasco from last December and the fallout from that.  John claimed that Jack Warner voted for Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup.  Moreover, he claimed that Warner’s promises to the USA and England bids that were not honored caused butthurt to those groups and has resulted in the two countries creating a conspiracy to entrap Warner and Bin Hammam into a sticky wicket.

“The whole thing is a conspiracy against Jack Warner. Jack promised the United States to push for the World Cup but when the thing came along at Fifa level Jack supported Qatar. That hurt the United States.

“Jack promised the English FA to push for the World Cup for them, but Jack sided with Russia so these two federations are up in arms against Jack. They are the only federations making trouble.”

FFS.

Warner denies that he voted for Qatar.  Warner’s words should not be trusted any further than you can throw Kirstie Alley.  Although, it really wouldn’t make much sense for Warner to support Qatar because he probably could have made much more illicit money for himself with a World Cup hosted in CONCACAF rather than half a world away in the middle of a glass factory in the Middle East.

The whole part about a USA-England conspiracy just boggles the mind.  Does John somehow think we believe the USSF, which has said very few words in public about the bidding and selection process, was behind Warner and Bin Hammam setting up a meeting in the Caribbean that excluded the Americans so that Bin Hammam could make his pitch to the Caribbean officials for support in the FIFA Presidential campaign?  It’s beyond ridiculous.  The USSF would have to had set up a room that nine federations saw and knew about where cash was handed out in manila envelopes to the officials at this very meeting, then arrange for the leaks to happen.

It pisses me off just to think people might believe this tripe.  Sure the narrative about the big, bad USA setting up the poor Caribbean nations probably sells well on a general political level.  But, in this instance the facts just don’t fit the story.  The facts indicate Bin Hammam and Warner were in on a scheme to pay for votes that has led to Warner’s forced resignation from all football dealings and the very likely expulsion of Bin Hammam from all things football.

I think that generally there’s quite a bit to the belief that the US is screwing over smaller Latin American/Caribbean nations. We do have quite a history of it, after all. I just don’t think it happens in the world of soccer. Which makes it okay for me to be a raving jingo when it comes to the US national team.

  2. @Goat: Exactly. This ain’t happening in soccer. We need CONCACAF just like it needs the USSF. We don’t have the political power to pull off these shenanigans in football.

@TFA With your bad knee you shouldn’t be throwing anyone, let alone Kirstie Alley.
