The Good, The Bad, The WTF

Browsing the results from yesterday’s Europa League action got me thinking: I wonder what some of these obscure (to me) clubs’ shirts look like? Perhaps there’s some GBWTF-worthy material to be found. Well, there’s too many of these clubs to run down, and doing google image searches for jerseys from foreign countries sometimes yields bad results if you don’t know the precise search terms to use. Having said that, let’s take a look at a few shirts from yesterday’s big winners.

AZ Alkmaar 2011-2012

Jozy Altidore kicked off a 4-1 thrashing of Malmo FF by AZ Alkmaar. Good for him. Beside the fact that it looks just like an Arsenal kit, Alkmaar’s home kit is all class. Good stuff from kitmaker Macron, even if I’ve never heard of them before. Let’s hope Jozy flourishes here.

AEK Athens

The now Lukaku-less Anderlecht handed AEK Athens a 4-1 loss. Rather than show you a rather boring Anderlecht shirt, here’s an old AEK shirt that I thought was interesting. Kappa makes us reach for the seizure pills here. I think I see a bird in there.

vintage PSG shirt

Paris Saint-Germain (hi, NYKid!) were 3-1 winners over SV Salzburg. First of all, let me say that you pretty much can’t go wrong with a PSG jersey. They’ve been sponsored by Nike for years and years now, and I like most every PSG shirt I’ve come across. So I had to dig pretty deep to find this example from sometime in the early 90′s when Commodore still had money to spend on soccer marketing. Makes me want to dust off the old C64 (if I still had it) and load up some 5.25″ game floppies.

Besiktas 2009-2010

Finally, Turkish side Besiktas spanked Maccabi Tel Aviv 5-1. Curious side note about Besiktas: when you do an image search for them, you will come across lots of pictures of Allen Iverson, because he played there last season. Allen Iverson. I wonder how quick his crossover move is these days?

Anyway, this pic is from two years ago, when Besiktas unveiled their kit lineup. First off, I’m guessing “cola turka” is some kind of fizzy drink brand, but my South American brain reads that as “Turkish Ass”. Now, I like the shirt on the right, but the one on the left and especially the middle one are questionable, at best. I didn’t know they had court jesters in the Ottoman Empire.

That’s all for our whirlwind tour of Europe’s 2nd rate cup. Enjoy the weekend footie, folks.
