Cosmos CEO Resigns

Will this jersey ever make it to MLS?

Paul Kemsley, the CEO/Chairman of the NY Cosmos “soccer club”, has resigned his position with club. Kemsley, the frontman for the consortium of investors that purchased the NY Cosmos name from Pepe Pinton, was leading the group’s campaign to become the 20th MLS franchise.

The statement indicated that “[b]usiness will continue as usual for the club and its day-‐to-‐day management.”

Ha.

The Cosmos are a club in name only as it has no team, no stadium, no players and only a merchandising/marketing arm. The marketing side is pretty good since it ensnared The Likely Lad into purchasing Cosmos paraphernalia. Perhaps it was the legendary names like Eric Cantona, Giorgio Chinaglia, and to lesser extent Cobi Jones that had been recruited to be a part of the club’s campaign. Or maybe the sweet duds.

Who knows?

But one wonders what this all means for the Cosmos. Leaders do not get sacked when things are going well. Leaders get sacked when it appears the goals will not be met, when victory no longer appears feasible.

Did the group lose faith in Kemsley’s ability to secure financing for the expansion fee? Get the necessary stadium financing? Or did he try to kill somebody’s dog with tainted sausage?

Probably not the last.

But, considering that MLS appears desperate to have a second MLS club in New York City and desperate to have the Cosmos brand recognition, it would seem that Kemsley may have royally screwed the proverbial pooch.

If so, they would be the best in the league.

  2. The answer to that question, TFA and MP, is no, as Adidas in all their templated glory is exclusive to the MLS.

  3. @Keith: Good point. I forgot about that. But, maybe when they get there the adidas contract will expire and nike will be the kit provider or they will be allowed to contract individually.

  4. This is a sad sad day for companies premised on viral marketing and no actual product. Somewhere, a weatix Dubstep teddy bear cries and cries and cries.

    @elliott: Mighty Groupon trembleth?

For the love of all things soccer, no second team is needed in the NY Metro area. That great big city doesn’t support the Pink Cows with their so called star-studded roster and their admittedly beautiful Energy Drink Arena.

  7. @RFCSean: Have you TRIED getting onto and off of the PATH train at Harrison? Clusterfuck is a word too kind. If the crowd can’t get to and from the stadium, they won’t come.

    Hey, an anonsters sighting.
I would like to see MLS just turn the shirts over to the clubs and take like a 50% cut instead of the stupid group deal.

Keith are you a moron the jersey thing has been talked about endlessly- they have a deal to get out of the umbro deal if they get into MLS – wake up if your gonna comment check your facts .

  10. So reading’s not your strong suit, then, is it? Because if they do “get out of their Umbro deal” if they go into MLS, then, no, the jersey pictured-an Umbro product- will not see an MLS pitch. Which is exactly what I fucking said in the first place.
