That was the last time the USMNT played France.
We lost. Surprise!
Actually, no. We were still pretty poor back then. And thanks to the Internet and our friend Dave Wasser you can see bits of exactly how bad.
Some of you might remember Wasser as the guy that has the huge archive of NALS matches, as well as some international and other misc. tilts because, well, he’s that guy.
The US actually played France twice in 1979. The visitors blanked us 6-0 at the Meadowlands on May 2. The return leg (sort of as it was a home and home… the highlights above are from this match) in Gay Paree saw the US again get blanked to the tune of 3-0. So yeah, a collective 9-0 drubbing. Ugh.
Anyway, the US takes on France tomorrow on 11/11/11. Thirty-two years later and France is still better than us. But we’ve closed the gap, bitches. Maybe after another 8 World Cup cycles we’ll catch and/or pass them. If not, maybe someone in the freedom-loving red, white and blue will make a similarly brutal tackle on Samir Nasri as the one on Plantini in the video above. Not that we’re pulling for anyone to get hurt. And not that we’re even sure if Nasri is on the France roster.
We looked. But not for more than a couple of clicks.
Kick is at 3 pm eastern. NYK will be forced to pick a side before kickoff.![]()

I was busy being born in 1979.
Also, what’s with the Fox Soccer Report guys all growing really crap mustaches?
@WNF: Somehow the ‘stache makes that Irish fella look like Malcolm in the Middle.
I was also being born in 1979.
Old guys… In Korea, this game is on at 5 oclock saturday mornin’, and I work Saturday :(. However, 11/11/11 is pepero day here, so I got lots of candy today. It does not even out.
You young whippersnappers! I was two. Arkie, what the fuck is pepero day?
Last I read, Nasri was sent back to England injured. I was one year old in 1979. I love how Platini attempts to walk it off, then falls back down. Nowadays, he would’ve stayed on the ground for five minutes with his hands over his face.
BG: I’m sure it wouldn’t have been TOO tough to track down the lineup, but the googol’ing I did (“France roster USMNT”) didn’t produce anything in the first 5 or 6 links. Think all of them game me the US roster. Kind of strange that no US outlets bothered with the opponent’s squad as who we’re playing is kind of important. Pretty sure I saw someone mention Kos likely starting at CB and that was about it.
I believe the ‘staches are being grown for Movember for a charity.
