More Russian Shenanigans

Meh. I've seen better views.

Remember when I told you about the Russian fertilizer king who was poised to take over AS Monaco FC?

Geez, people – it was only a week ago!

Well, it appears that Dmitry Rybolovlev is continuing his money dump in an attempt to shield his assets during his bitter divorce. In addition to buying the football club, he has now also bought the most expensive apartment in the history of New York City.

Clever oligarch that he is, the Russian potash magnate bought the $88M penthouse at 15 Central Park West in his daughter’s name. 22 year-old Ekaterina Rybolovleva is an avid competition horsewoman, but somehow I doubt that her winnings are substantial enough to have paid for her new digs on her own.

The mysterious college student (I’m going to assume she’s enrolled at Baruch College, because it amuses me) has her main residence in Monaco (so she can keep an eye on the players!) but needed a pied-a-terre during the semester. As a wonderful side benefit, having the penthouse be designated as a secondary residence means that she avoids a serious amount of taxes.

The lavish apartment (seen here in an April 2010 Architectural Digest spread) is being sold by former Citigroup creator and chairman Sandy Weill, whom Time Magazine referred to as “1 of the 25 people to blame for the financial crisis.” To his credit, Weill has said that all proceeds from the sale will go to charity.

As for the Russian, if he keeps spending this type of money, he’ll never bring Monaco back to Ligue 1.
