QUARTERFINALS DAY 2: Brokeback Hangover

costa rica fans

Peace out, Ticos.

Welp, Neymar and James Rodriguez are now both out of the World Cup significantly dimming the superstar wattage.  Fortunately, Lionel Messi is still gadflying about today against the Waffle-Bastards Belgium in the early match.  The late match features the Netherlands and CONCACAF surprise Costa Rice.  No supernovas in that match but the Dutch do have Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben.

Neither Belgium nor Argentina  has looked particularly impressive so far in the tournament.  Argentina has left it late and to Messi (understandably) with a very suspect defense.  Belgium just hasn’t put it all together in any match yet.  OOSAH ran Belgium into the ground in the Round of 16 so it will be interesting to see how well they recover. Argentine also had extra time in the Round of 16 so Belgium should not be at too much of a disadvantage.

Prediction: Argentina’s defense will finally be its undoing and Messi will not be able to make up for it.  3-2 Belgium.

One would think the Dutch would be a shoo-in for the semi-finals against the superstar-less Ticos.  But, Costa Rica has proven itself very capable in this tournament of pulling out hard fought victories.  The Netherlands pretty much rest all of their hopes on RVP and Robben.  There’s not much else on the squad but Louis Van Gaal has been pushing all the right buttons.

Prediction: The clock is striking midnight and Cinderella has to go home.  But not after a hard fought 2-1 loss.
