Just another day in Stoke it seems.
I don’t think many expect a Stoke/Blackburn match to be the bastion of rough and tumble fan aggression. But it seems like an unsuspecting Rover fan didn’t either, and came out on the wrong side of the event. The department of the obvious, The Sun, entered up this succinct quote:
One Rovers fan said Sunday: “Some of them had been drinking.”

Was it worth it mate?
I am sure you all don’t need to be told what happened at Upton Park last night, I mean the papers are full of it, the TV is on it and quite frankly if you are English like me, you are embarrassed and disgusted this morning.
I am extremely ashamed that this incident has taken football back years. One game and a bunch of animals have done incredible damage to the games reputation in one evening. It has been years since an incident like this has occurred, and I really thought that the cancer of violence at football had been cured.
The last notable incident was in 2002 and that also involved Millwall, no surprise there right?
So what went wrong, who are the culprits and what can be done to stop these mindless, pathetic excuses for humans before it happens again, seriously damaging England’s chances of being awarded the World Cup in 2018?

Back in April I told you about the release in England of ‘Away Days’ based on the excellent Kevin Sampson book, well another tale of football thuggery is hitting the screens in September and this one is based on the 1999 TV film ‘The Firm’ staring Gary Oldman. The original was very good indeed, dealing with football hooliganism during the Thatcher years. The (original) Firm was directed by the late and great Alan Clarke, who also directed ‘Made in Britain’ and ‘Scum’. Did we really need a remake? Probably not as it will certainly not be better than it’s predecessor, but lets have a look anyway…
The Firm 2009 is directed by Nick Love who has visited this territory before with The Football Factory which was quite frankly, easy to describe in one word…Shit.

William Shatner: not a fan of Swedish soccer
From our soccer studies, we know that hooliganism can strike anywhere at anytime. Take Millwall, for example. It breaks out there quite often. (Calm thyselves, Lions fans!)
And yet when you think of hooligans, you don’t often think of Sweden, the land of meatballs, gorgeous women and affordable flat-pack furniture made of plywood and popsicle sticks (and the damn stuff NEVER, ever, ever has enough of those washers with which to get the job done).
Try telling that to some Djurgarden fans who were more than a little pissed on the flight home that they lost 2-1 at Malmo FF. With about 100 passengers crammed in to their tiny seats and waiting for takeoff, a few disgruntled Djurgarden fans got into a ruckus, assaulting one hapless passenger who tried to break up the melee and threatening several comely (I mean, they must be pretty, right?) flight attendants in the process.
Even after five louts were kicked off the plane before takeoff, the fighting continued, and seven others were detained for questioning upon landing in Stockholm.
Quote the article:
“[Stockholm Police Spokesperson Matt] Eriksson said the fans were noisy, “didn’t sit down, didn’t fasten their seat belts and didn’t follow directions from the attendants.”
One passenger who tried to stop the hooligans was assaulted and taken to hospital after arrival but was not seriously injured, Malmo Aviation spokesman Olof Lofgren said.
He said the pilot was considering interrupting the flight and landing at another airport, but decided to continue to Bromma where police were waiting.
“We transport football supporters a lot, but I’ve never experienced anything like this,” Lofgren said. “It’s deplorable that adults act this way.”
Although none of the yobs were arrested, they could still see some jail time for assault and breach of the peace, and possibly even air sabotage, a beautifully-named infringement that carries a maximum of four years in prison.
Next time, I’d suggest that the miserable fans simply go and get laid to blow off some steam. I mean, you live in fucking Sweden! How bad could it be there!

Don’t mock the Plock
It’s not easy being a football fan sometimes. When you’re one of the better teams, you get the joy of winning most weeks, but even the best sides come unstuck from time-to-time, and suddenly you’re the ones on the other end of a heavy defeat.
Well, in Poland, the remedy is simple: don’t drink your woes away… just use your fists instead! This past weekend, Polish First League (really their 2nd-tier division) high-fliers Flota Swinoujscie welcomed struggling Wisla Plock to town for a league fixture. As expected, Flota won the match comfortably, 4-1, and while the home crowd celebrated the beatdown, the small cadre of disgruntled Plock fans decided to vent their frustrations by hopping the fences and assaulting the Flota supporters. Makes sense, right?
Check the videos below: the first is mostly match highlights (flip to the last 35 seconds or so to see the trouble brew and unfold in full), whereas the second is the news report. All us UFers find it incredible that the visiting fans could have beat down the home fans like that!
Perhaps for Flock’s next match, the fans should wear the kits and the players should take a rest in the stands. It might help them greatly.
5 goals, several punches, 27 arrested, and one hilarious story.
